When purchasing goods in the EU, consumers have statutory rights if the goods do not conform to the contract or are defective. This legal protection lasts for at least 2 years and is independent of any voluntary commercial guarantee provided by the manufacturer.
Further details can be found in the European Union harmonised notice on the legal guarantee.
Statutory rights in respect of defective goods apply to defects in materials, manufacture or workmanship. Normal wear and tear corresponding to the nature of the product and the manner and intensity of its use is not considered a defect. This may include, for example, gradual wear of operating cords, chains, seals or other mechanically stressed parts. However, if the damage is caused by a defect in materials or workmanship, it may be the subject of a valid claim.
